Our First Global Bird Fair – A Milestone for Elsewhere-Farakunku

A few weeks ago, we had the joy and privilege of attending our first-ever Global Bird Fair – and what an experience it was!

Held in the beautiful countryside of Rutland, UK, the Global Bird Fair brings together nature lovers, birding enthusiasts, conservationists, and eco-travel advocates from all around the world. For us at Elsewhere-Farakunku, it was more than just an event – it was a meaningful step into the international birding community.

As a small, eco-conscious lodge based in Tujereng, The Gambia, this was a chance for us to share what we’re so passionate about: our love for birds, nature, and responsible travel. We met fellow lodge owners, tour guides, birding organisations, and curious travellers – all united by a shared appreciation for the natural world.

Why We Went

We’ve always believed that The Gambia is one of West Africa’s hidden gems for birdwatching. With over 540 bird species, diverse habitats, and a warm welcome awaiting every guest, it’s the perfect destination for those seeking nature and tranquillity. Attending the Bird Fair allowed us to introduce Elsewhere-Farakunku to a wider audience – not just as a place to stay, but as part of a deeper, more immersive experience in Gambian birdlife and culture.

What We Took Away

The atmosphere was electric – talks, stalls, exhibitions, and friendly conversations at every corner. We were inspired by the stories of conservation work across the globe, from protecting migratory birds to promoting sustainable tourism. It reminded us why we started Elsewhere-Farakunku in the first place: to offer a peaceful retreat that gives back to nature.

We also had the pleasure of connecting with birders who had either visited The Gambia before or were eager to explore it for the first time. Hearing their interest and enthusiasm reaffirmed that there is a growing appetite for ethical, nature-based travel – and we’re proud to be part of that movement.

What’s Next for Us

This is just the beginning. Our time at the Global Bird Fair opened doors for exciting collaborations, future visits, and new ideas to further improve what we offer at the lodge. We returned home to Tujereng with hearts full of gratitude and minds buzzing with possibilities.

So, to everyone we met at the fair: thank you. And to those we haven’t met yet – we invite you to come experience Elsewhere-Farakunku for yourself. Whether you’re an avid birder, a curious beginner, or simply someone who loves nature, you’ll find a warm welcome, peaceful surroundings, and birdlife in abundance here on the Gambian coast.

Elsewhere-Farakunku is a treat for all nature lovers. The perfect spot to ensure you have the power to choose between maintaining solitude with nature, and connection with the chosen few individuals sharing the Elsewhere-Farakunku space. Whatever you choose is more than acceptable – and you’ll likely do a bit of both: socialising and enjoying a quiet relationship with the natural environment. You’ll want to come again.
